SUBMIT YOUR STORIES

M. M. De Voe has just joined the staff of Our Stories, a new literary journal dedicated to easing the frustrations of the slush pile. It’s a rather brilliant, if unconventional business model. To wit: a writer pays a fee upfront to submit a story, and if the story is selected for publication the fee is immediatly returned. If the story is not published by the journal, it is assigned to an editor whose job it is to explain to the writer why this story is not working, and to make suggestions on how to improve it. Win-win for the author. Rather like a high-level writing workshop with hand-selected editors. (The editing staff, all MFAs, have to pass a rather rigorous interview process that includes a mock-critique.) Turnaround time is generally a month or less. Check out the website here.
