Now available at your local bookstore — or on the "shop" page of this website — the just-released anthology: THE BEST OF THE FIRST LINE, EDITORS’ PICKS 2002-2006. "Dulce Domum," by M. M. De Voe represents the Editors’ Pick for Fall 2006.

Editor David LaBounty writes in his wonderful introduction to the story: "Dulce Domum is great … fine writing … That, and I believe she’s created the craziest suicide note ever." Just got word that The Best of the First Line — Editors’ Picks: 2002-2006 is almost here. Publication date is Mid-March. The anthology (ISBN: 978-0-9745900-6-6) contains 23 stories of which one is “Dulce Domum” by M. M. De Voe — the editor’s choice for Winter 2006.

The veil of secrecy is lifted…
The three editors of THE FIRST LINE picked one story from each of the issues for which they created a sentence (recall–TFL is a journal which gives a first line and then authors must finish the story) beginning with Vol 4 Issue 1 and ending with Vol 8 Issue 4. Then each picked a second story from Vol 6 Iss 1, Vol 8 Iss 1, and Vol 8 Iss 2 — the sentences that won The TFL First Line contests. As a result, THE BEST OF THE FIRST LINE: Editors’ Choice 2002 - 2006 was created. This collection of 23 stories will be released March 2008, as part of TFL’s tenth anniversary celebration.

M. M. De Voe’s story, “Dulce Domum” which previously received a Pushcart Nomination, has been selected for inclusion in this anthology. This marks the second “Editor’s Choice Award” for M. M. DeVoe. The first was for “Keep Watch” in the summer of 2007. Ask for THE BEST OF THE FIRST LINE: Editors’ Choice 2002 - 2006 in local bookstores that carry literary journals!

The editor of a publication that published an M. M. De Voe short story in 2006 has just announced that the story was selected for inclusion in their upcoming BEST OF ( — top secret — ) ANTHOLOGY! M. M.’s story was one of twenty or so selected for inclusion from the past five years of ( — top secret—)’s publication, and will be the second such anthology (—top secret—) has produced. The volume is expected to hit bookstores in March 2008. The veil of secrecy will be lifted in mid-November. Watch this space!

The reception at the University of Texas at Dallas far exceeded expectations. The audience numbered near 50, with many professors in house. Pictures may be posted at a later date (requiring some website revisions, no doubt) so that the cake, honoring the 20th anniversary of the publication of Sojourn can be properly appreciated by all on the web. The location, in a beautiful formal room of the Library, complete with large skylight letting in the long rays of the setting Texas sun, was spectacular. Other presenters were a nonfiction writer who spoke tragically of turtles, two poets (with particular commendation going to Brenton Cross, whose Jamaican patois performances of several poems including one recent verse about Hurricane Dean’s heartbreaking effect on his mother’s house, caused stunned and appreciative silence followed by thunderous applause) and ultimately, the event culminated in a stunning multimedia lecture by sculptor Eric McGehearty, whose sculptures address the impossibility of language, its inaccessibility, unreadable books, and other truly exhiliarating subjects. Editor’s Choice Award

Sojourn, the literary journal of the University of Texas at Dallas, has awarded the story Keep Watch its Editor’s Choice Award for 2007. Each editor (prose, poetry, nonfiction) makes the selection for his or her genre.

The story was also nominated for a Pushcart Prize. This marks the third Pushcart nomination for M. M. De Voe.

Don’t forget–M. M. De Voe will be appearing at UT/Dallas to do a reading of the story at the launch of their current issue on August 24th. Please attend if you can!

Best of ‘Net nomination!

“From the Leaf Lore,” first published in Fickle Muses: an online journal of legend and myth, has been nominated for the 2007 Best of the ‘Net anthology. If selected, it will be reprinted in the online anthology, which also publishes finalists. The Sundress Best of the ‘Net Anthology is similar to the Pushcart Prize in that all nominations are made by editors who have published these works within the given year.
